Nursing Foundation of
Rhode Island Awards
$10,500 in Student Nurse Scholarships
Thirteen nursing students from Rhode Island colleges were awarded scholarships totaling $10,500 by the Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island. The scholarship awards were presented at a reception held on July 18th at the U.R.I. College on Nursing. The scholarships, which ranged from $250 to $1,000, are awarded to Rhode Island undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing who demonstrate financial need.
Dayle Joseph, Dean of the URI College of Nursing which hosted the reception, welcomed students and their family members to the reception and noted how important the Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island (NFRI) has been in providing students with financial assistance. Trudy Mulvey, RN, President of the Nursing Foundation presented the scholarship awards many of which are donated by individuals in memory of former nurses.
The following students were awarded scholarships: from the Community College of Rhode Island, Crystal Tavares Beausoleil (Richmond), Johanne DiSalvo (Wakefield), Rachel Ritchie (Providence) and Stacey Sherring (No. Scituate); from Rhode Island College, Olulade Majofodun (Providence); from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, Jody Therien (Pawtucket); from URI, Karen Gibson (Exeter), Karen Haidemenos (Warwick), Lauren Houle (South Kingstown), Sarah Kirwin (Newport), Leah Murphy (Jamestown), Dena Tran (Middletown) and Marianne Woodruff (West Greenwich).
"As the nursing shortage is projected to worsen as the baby boomers age, an adequate supply of nurses is critical to our continued ability to provide quality health care," said NFRI President Trudy Mulvey in announcing the scholarship awards. I am pleased the Foundation has been able to continue this level of scholarship support as many of the students are working and may also be supporting families. These scholarships provide funds needed by the students to successfully complete their courses."
The Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island is a volunteer non-profit organization founded in 1991 to promote nursing and to foster its advancement through the awarding of scholarships and research grants. It has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships and research grants since it began.
