Awards 2013 Nurse Education Scholarships and Leadership Award

The Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island (NFRI) awarded scholarships to twenty-two nursing students from area colleges at a ceremony held on July 23rd at the College of Nursing at the University of Rhode Island.   Dean Mary Sullivan welcomed the students, Nursing Foundation Trustees, donors and guests. NFRI Vice President Jeanne Sherman was joined by Foundation Trustees and donors in presenting the scholarship awards. The scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,000, were awarded to students based on their good academic standing and demonstrated need.

Undergraduate student nurses selected for the scholarship awards, their school affiliations and designated donor fund are listed below.

Janelle Amoako of Cranston (URI – Dwyer Fund); Loretto Byanski of Warwick (URI – Drew Lewis Fund); Amanda Carr of Cumberland (URI – Sherman Fund); Ashley Clark of Smithfield (URI – Melaragno Fund); Kathryn Coleman of North Kingstown (URI – Roger Williams Hospital Alumni Fund); Natasha DeMacedo Dow of East Providence (RI College – Enright Fund); Glenna Druken of Newport (URI – Enright Fund); Burnese Jacobs-Williams (St. Joseph Hospital – Ethel Ferrara Fund); Lauren Kesack of Cranston (RI College – Mulvey-Briant Award); Abigail King of West Warwick (URI - Sherman Fund); FlorMaria Lang of Pawtucket (St. Joseph Hospital - Ethel Ferrara Fund); Cherylanne LaFrance of Warwick (CCRI – Zanella Fund); Erika Leonard of Warwick (URI – Drew Lewis Fund); Rachel Lowry of East Providence (RI College – Bodine/Williams Fund); Melissa Muriel of Pawtucket (URI - Roger Williams Hospital Alumni Fund); Wilhelmina Owusu-Ansan of Providence (St. Joseph Hospital - Ethel Ferrara Fund); Danilee Parylan of Providence (St. Joseph Hospital - Ethel Ferrara Fund); Jamie Spardello of West Greenwich (St. Joseph Hospital - Ethel Ferrara Fund ); Lindsey Thompson of Riverside (URI – Mugurdichian Fund); John Villari of Cranston (URI - Mugurdichian Fund); Amanda Vinhateiro of Kingston (URI – Dwyer Fund); and Natasha Viveiros of Pascoag (URI - Roger Williams Hospital Alumni Fund).

In addition to the undergraduate awards, Debra Bento, RN a University of Rhode Island graduate student was awarded the Clare Sullivan Memorial Leadership scholarship to pursue studies in gerontological nursing practice

Incorporated in 1992, the Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island is managed by a volunteer Board of Trustees. The non-profit Foundation has awarded 205 nursing scholarships and 19 nursing research grants since its inception. For more information go to: www.rinursingfoundation.org.
