Nursing Foundation of RI Awards $14,000 in Student Nurse Scholarships

The Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island held its 2008 Scholarship Awards reception on July 16th in the auditorium of St. Joseph's Hospital Fatima Unit, North Providence. Trudy Mulvey, NFRI President, welcomed the award recipients and their guests. Ms. Mulvey introduced Debra A. Douglas, St. Joseph Hospital Senior Vice President for Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer, who congratulated the award recipients. Ms. Douglas noted that the nursing profession inspires a passion in its practitioners and the many different opportunities a career in nursing holds. Margaret Pfeiffer, Administrative Director of Psychiatric Services at St. Joseph's Hospital and a member of the NFRI Board, also welcomed the awardees and guests. Scholarships totaling $14,000 were awarded to sixteen undergraduate nursing students and one graduate student. Since its inception, the Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island has awarded $109,250 in scholarships to students studying nursing at Rhode Island schools. To be considered for an award, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be recommended by faculty.

History and Mission

The Nursing Foundation of Rhode Island (NFRI) was incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of Rhode Island in 1991. The purpose of NFRI is to promote nursing in charitable, educational and scientific ways. Its mission is threefold:
bulletto increase public awareness of nursing and its role in promoting  health and well-being,
bulletto foster the advancement of nursing through the awarding  of research grants and scholarships; and
bulletto preserve the history of nursing in Rhode Island.

Programs

The two major programs provided by NFRI which provide direct benefits or assistance are:
bulleta scholarship program for student nurses and nurses seeking graduate degrees, and
bulleta research grant program for graduate level nurses.

Accomplishments
bullet Awarded $109,250 student nurse scholarships to over 120 undergraduate and graduate students attending Rhode Island nursing education programs including the Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, Salve Regina University, St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Rhode Island.  Many of the students who have received scholarships are non-traditional students trying to juggle their studies with work and family responsibilities, including child rearing.
 
bullet Initiated the Clare Sullivan Nurse Leader graduate scholarship named after a noted Rhode Island nurse leader and founding member of the NFRI Board of Trustees who died during 1998. Clare Sullivan nurse leader scholarships of $1,000 have been awarded to eight individuals.
 
bullet Provided $35,207 in research grants ranging from $765 to $2500. Research grants are used to support research on clinical nursing that will improve patient care and for nursing education research that will improve curriculum and/or retention of students.  Projects have included studies on the effectiveness of patient care models and ethics and human rights in nursing practice.
 
bulletProvided financial support to both the State Nurses Association and the State Student Nurses Association to assist with various educational programs and conferences.
